At a news conference, Zeithaml said he wouldn’t take over as permanent president and said that at first he turned down the interim job because he worried he would be perceived as part of a “conspiracy” to remove Sullivan. “I don’t support the decision to remove her,’’ he said.

In a letter to alumni, Zeithaml wrote: “Some people disagree with my decision to serve in this role, and I understand their reasons. After profound deliberation, however, I felt that I had no choice. I am sorry if you disagree with my decision, but please join me in my efforts to move the University forward.”

The 15-member Board of Visitors voted unanimously to reinstate Sullivan less than three weeks after ousting her — a move that infuriated students and faculty, had the governor threatening to fire the entire governing board and sparked a debate about the most effective way to operate public universities in an era of tight finances. Shortly after the vote, Sullivan thanked the board members for their renewed confidence in her.
