When word first came down that Congress was looking to mandate that all new vehicles to be sold with Event Data Recorders, we knew that the added tech was going to be pricey. According to Automotive News, if legislators have their way, the new automotive black boxes will need to be both fire resistant and waterproof. Add in a significant amount of recording time before and after an accident, and suddenly the price tag per unit could soar up to a lofty $4,000 to $5,000. Currently, the EDRs track about five seconds worth of information just before an accident, though some legislators are pushing for up to 75 seconds of recording pre-crash. Between the fire insulation and added recording time, analysts believe the devices will swell to shoebox size, also creating a new packaging issue for automakers.

And who's going to be shelling out the cash for the indestructible, mammoth recorders? The short answer is the automakers, though you can bet they won't just be soaking up the cost out of the goodness of their hearts. Odds are that $4,000-per-box price tag will be passed right along to consumers if such devices become law, so don't be surprised to see sticker prices climb if the boxes become mandatory in 2015.

No need for this bullshit. It's understandable on public transport (Buses / semis) / vehicles owned & maintained by employers, but having it on consumer vehicles is fucking stupid.

exactly what is the reason for this? is determining fault some huge problem plaguing the country? in what way would this help that? it's not like this will keep claims out of court.

fail.

Does it report when you are doing mad drifts and give you points? What about when you are banging it off the limiter next to some mexicans at the lights? Cool points? Can you upload these directly to facebook?

this is merely a stepping stone. Next thing the box will be wired to the accelerator and a GPS to make sure you dont go faster than what the law says you can go.

I could live with this, as long as it's reasonable... like 85 mph.

I've seen to many people go splat showing off.

Fuck.

I'll just build my own.

And if you want any sort of personal security, you'll need to do the same. You think it will survive an evidence room if a cop decided to beat you up in audio range? You're going to need emergency event upload capability in one.

Not if mass produced on the level that will be required to put one in every car.

it's also hilarious to think that recording time has anything to do with cost or size given the cost of two 1gb redundant flash systems at a few dollars if that.

You do need some decent size for fireproofing though, just look at the difference between a media fire proof safe's walls and a paper fire proof safe's walls. media can't take higher temps so it has to be a lot thicker.

It should be about $200-250 max, as one could just buy a waterproof case, sd data recorder/sd, media rated safe for about that.

I would also want the spec to be open source and the data to be readily available to the end user so one doesn't have to pay money to get access to it.

This is a bogus article, the added cost might be a couple of hundred at most. Most new vehicles already come with some type of EDR.
