The demand for human labour for construction and agriculture was growing so fast that there wern't enough white workers to facilitate this demand, so (Black) Slaves were brought in and forced to work, renember in these times blacks were "2nd" class citizens.
 
they were necessary to produce crops on plantations. and they were hardy for they were immune to the diseases in america unlike the indentured servants who easily contracted them and died.
and they were physically stronger and fitter
