TZ Talkback - Media Blasters Announces New May Titles Incl. "Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei"

It's not a high school comedy in the traditional sense. It's more of a black comedy/satire on Japanese society that just happens to take place in a high school. The characters in this show are really screwed up.

That's also another question here. They probably only have the first series for now, but how long will it take before we get Zoku, Goku, and Zan? I'm thinking it's only a matter of sales, but I really hope they don't ditch Zetsubou Sensei part way through even if it doesn't do phenomenally.

I'm seeing some conflicting reports around, so I wouldn't count it out so soon. The no dub option would be kind of boring, since I actually want to see them take a crack at it, even if it does turn out to be crap.

Zetsubo Sensei is anything but your normal high school comedy. It's more like Welcome to the NHK, except with more drugs.

And the opening is actually tame compared to the actual show >_>

BUREBUREBUREBURE! Darn it Tae, you've got that ear worm stuck in my head again.

And yes, for those of you seeing that for the first time, SHAFT is trying to probe your mind with S+M techniques, yuri images, suicides, phallic imagery and the mangaka trying to eyerape you. And that's just the OP!

(There's probably a subliminal message or two in there somewhere)

It's Black Comedy, as the best description. The very first scene is the main character trying to hang himself, only to yell "Are you crazy?! What if I died?!" after he got rescued. But the girl thinks he was merely making himself "taller" because she's a full-glass person

You should see the openings for Zoku, Goku, & Zan Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. Those openings are way crazy looking than that one.

While it does star a high school teacher and his class, it has more in common with NHK than it does Azumanga, Lucky Star, or Hidamari Sketch.

Ah, I gotcha. I misunderstood on what level it was being compared. So you are saying the type of comedy or comedy elements(black or dark) found in NHK is similar to what can be found in SZS.

Well that sounRAB much more promising than any synopsis I have previously read on the title, but no matter how dark the comedy if its full of classroom settings and ubber b!tchy female students I want nothing to do with it......So if I may ask, is it?

John Sirabella mentioned it a while ago when people complained GGG part 2 wasn't dubbed. Disney expressed interest in the series but wanted to Americanize it. rab didn't want to do that, so it fell through. Then the fact the DVRAB sold poorly as all get out pretty much sealed its fate.

You won't find any normal stereotypes in this show. The closest tsunderes are either parodies of transfer students that sue anyone that sees her panties ("I'll SUE YOU!") or extreme OCD that murder the target as a third option >_>

Ah, Zetsubo Sensei. From watching S1, Zoku, and Goku last semester and Zan this semester, my anime club and myself think your animation studio blew most of the budget on drugs. Drugs do explain those opening sequences, though, and I need to add those songs on my iPod.

I do enjoy Zetsubo, and will buy the DVRAB. I don't care if it's sub-only, as this series may be too hard to make a dub that will do this series justice.

I really, really have to wonder about how they'll handle the insane amounts of background text.

I enjoyed the show, but not enough to pick up anything less than a box set, if at all possible, further down the line. My wallet's already bleeding too much as it is for half-season sets.

Disney... Well that might have been interesting. Terrible, but interesting. Here I was hoping CN looked into it but I figured they didn't.

Now I realize it supposedly sold poorly but if it sold so poorly why have they re-released the first season twice and the second season once (meaning 3 release for S1 and 2 for S2)? Must not have done terribly if they're bothering to release it again.

Repackaging old discs in new SKUs to sneak them back on store shelves at a lower MSRP - it's an attempt to get into profitability with the title, not a sign of success.
