Two questions on Playstation 3.?

1. I updated via internet to 2.3 and it says to "use the wireless remote" to accept the changes" I tried with the remote it came with and it did not work. I bought a "wireless remote" but it has opening for batteries, but has a USB plug. Does it work like an I-Pod where you connect it to the Playstation and it is "charged" that way?

If fully charged then would I need it to "accept the upgrade to 2.3"?
IT HAS NO OPENING FOR BATTERIES.
 
yes you have to connect the remote to the ps3 using a usb cable so it can charge, it has an inbuilt battery
