The rider does make the big difference, look at the difference between the MotoGP teammates (substitute your favorite type of racing).
Tuning is also big especially when you have made big hardware changes.

I run ZX12-Rs. Same issue, you can search the Dynojet website and find a download to suit your exhaust/air filter setup -and sometimes, it's usually a pretty good approximation.

I had a fairly stock bike running K&Ns, full Akrapovic titanium evolution exhaust, Power Commander, advanced ignition, and the download map suited it really well – checked it on rollers and it was close enough across the range not to remap anything.

I transferred the same goodies onto the next bike – same spec exactly, and used the same map, but she was lean all over. Re-loaded the map, checked everything, no difference so set her up on rollers, and gained 14bhp.

ZX12s are a bit more sensitive to this kind of tuning than Hayabusas because 12s pick up a lot more power from an exhaust change than ‘Busas do, but the lesson to learn is that you have to put a bike on a dyno to get it set up right.

(Then your ‘Busa won’t be quite so far behind the ZX12!!)
