1. I made cookies that turned out hollow inside, why did this happen?

I was boiling water in a pot, and forgot about it, until all the water was gone and the pot was like dryed out looking, the bottom had a layer of soot on it, but cleaned off to the shiney brass color.... but is the pot still safe to use? there is also some scoring on the inside of the pan on the bottom..
