Tweaking my bike? HELP!?

I live in Rowland heights California. I have a hybrid bike and I'm on a VERY low budget. I love riding in the mountains. But I've noticed that some of the terrain I ride on really puts a toll on my bike, even though it's a mountain based bike. I recently lost control and skidded while going downhill and broke my wrist. I'm better now and I intent to go riding again. But I would prefer to modify my bike so it would be smoother on the rocky trails. I cannot afford to buy a new better bike! I'm really low on cash. Is there any way I can make it perform better? As in adding new parts, small tweaks etc? That would not cost me alot of money?

Since it's a hybrid frame, probably 26" wheels, you can just change the tires. Not the innertubes, but the actual tire that touches the ground. Most hybrid bikes come with a smooth tire for streets, but you can get a couple from a bike shop or even walmart for a good price.

If your bike is a 700c tired bike, change the tires! If you can run 700x35c, then run like a knobby or cyclocross tire. Make sure you have clearance for the frame and the brakes.

Update;

When I mean brake, sometimes the brakes won't open far enough when disconnected to pass
the tire through. I had one where I had to deflate the tire to get the front off which isn't a big problem
unless you have a rack where it holds it by the fork. So I had to deflate the front tire to get it off
to transport it.
