TV signals generally follow line of sight, so you usually need a straight, unobstructed line from your antenna to the TV station antenna. There are weird conditions called atmospheric ducting that can carry a signal much farther.
Amplifiers by themselves generally don't work well. A better idea is to get a fringe area directional antenna with a antenna rotator to pick up more stations.
