Tungsten T5 - Post Here (Part 2)

Man its been a while since I have visited here and look what yall are chatting about. :)

Just to comment about the WinMobile performance and speed versus the PalmOS: I own both and the PalmOS is faster in part because it is designed to be faster in terms of performance. Speed is almost a null argument between the two because of the differnt OSs and processor speeds. But my last two PDAs, a Zire71 and a rx3715 (just reviewed it for BargainPDA) are not the same performance wise. What takes one or two taps on the PalmOS, takes 3-5 on the WinMobile device. WinMobile also seems to process more (meaning you see that timer circle thingy) when just doing basic tasks like hittin the power button to turn it off. The T5 may get closer to the speed of the WinMobile but its performace will always be better because the OS was designed to cater to the user and not the user to the device.

Sorry for busting in like that. Whenever I can get a new PDA, it will probably be the T5 as I do like the drive mode ability and mucho internal memory.

Many blessings to all.

Many thanks Steve. I have been all over. Here I do more watching than posting because like at BargainPDA, people just seem to be a bit more civilized, except for that Garmin forum (they are another breed :)).

The weirdest end is that I am now without a PalmOS device. I have done more writing in the forums than anything. I guess before, I was too busy with my Palmie to be a contributing member all over. I will try to keep up being here, but I cannot guarantee to be in all places at the same time. I have no idea why God wants to do that, its hard :D

Back on topic:
I find it kool that there are many programs that are not working on the T5. In some parts, it is an OS update from the T3, so some things are bound to break. I know PS is really tight about people using loopholes to make software work, maybe 5.4 took some holes away and to that end many programs just cannot work, though that makes the problem with the default calendar funny to P1.

If I could, or there were some generous donors, I would love to invest in the T5 and its unpatched glory. Many of the bugs that have been mentioned do not effect me, and after living with a WinMobile device for a while, a slow PalmOS program will be very fast to me :p . Plus, after playing with the resolution of the WinMobile I had, a full screen and HVGA (at least) would be great just for reading scripture and websites. That is what I need most after basic PIM, which the T5 seems to do well.

Yeah, I think it's cool stuff doesn't work too. I'm gonna run right out and buy one so that apps I count on DON'T WORK, including the CALENDAR - what "program" was that supposed to "close off from working?" Itself?

This is the start of "closing doors in the OS" that will reach "maturity" in OS6 and I'm not happy about it all and most other people won't be either. Palm rocketed to success by allowing open architecture - we all read the small print about "10,000 developers worldwide."

I'll repeat that quote again:

"I find it kool that there are many programs that are not working on the T5."

That's great. Maybe I'll put a fancy screen & some buttons on the bathroom doorknob and call that a "PDA."

Maybe I'm missing something, d-roC -- could you explain what you mean? It seems to me $400 in software that no longer works is not a good thing.

I'm thinking that it's more "interesting" than anything that certain apps don't work. If developers would follow the rules, it'd be a perfect world. And how unexciting would that be? Pretty boring if you ask me. But then again, a perfect world would also be if anyone could do anything and expect it to work right. It ain't that way, sorry...:D Just my rather brief $.02

Luvmyt5..

you say that shadowplan works great. I have heard that there are issues with linking to the PIM apps (todo and datebook) from shadowplan. Have you had that experience or is all hunky-dory??

That's the most positive thing I've heard yet and THANKS SO MUCH for offering it. Welcome to the forum!!

The fact that Shadow Plan works (I use Bonsai) is EXTREMELY good news - probably means more to me than most others since those "outline" apps are more complicated than people think -- if it runs well, and if BUG ME RUNS WELL, that is CERTAINLY a very good sign!!

SOS's comment above about ShadowPlan also relates somewhat to Bonsai -- Natara Software just released a couple of DESKTOP fixes for the PIMS related to to-do's, so it must be a common thing. Be sure and check that possibility out, as SOS asked. Things like that can creep up on you after hotsynch but might not be noticieable til you "miss an assignment" or something awful.

Excellent. I'm officially hailing your small review as the MOST HELPFUL INFO YET amidst all the speculation (and I must say mostly negative from me!)

I wouldn't be without flash memory either. I use JackFlash and boy, after a hard reset when it all comes back -- beautiful thing! Make sure your DATABASES are protected in flash too . . . you can not store "Saved Preferences," for example, in Jack Flash - nor your address database (contacts), or calendar db or tasks db - for those you rely on an SD Card backup utility. If the T5 also saves THOSE in flash, you're ahead . . . HOWEVER, once a week I'd use a file utility like Filez or TealMover to COPY those databases to a folder on the card other than "Launcher" - you can create it anywhere on the card (I put it is a sub folder of "Launcher"). It won't show up on the "Regular SD Card Launch" screen of your T5, but it's safe in case you needed any or all of those databases.

Congratulations and many thanks for actually testing some 3rd party apps - very glad they're working out for you.

Paul:
I appreciate your kind words and will certainly take your advice to get a file utility--just trying to decide whether to get TealMover by itself or as part of the TealPoint Power Pack. Do you use TealScript too? So far, I have been cautious in backing up all at-risk files by frequent use of drag and drop with the Drive Mode, which is another T5 feature that is worth raving about. When I had to do the hard reset for the dread software upgrade, I got everything back quickly, including my ShadowPlan data and mountains of DataViz stuff. You are right--all of the changed categories (and color coding) from the Calendar and Contact List did get eaten, though.

SoS:
It has been only 18 days so I'm certainly not a ShadowPlan power user (yet!), but I have not had any T5 compatibility issues yet, not with ShadowPlan or any other software. My links from ShadowPlan to ToDo and Datebook worked fine, but after reading Paul's comments I did go back to make some additional test links (just for you!) and then synched a few times on each of them to make sure nothing funny was going on. Hunky-dory is what it is so far.

Bests regards, Ann

I will PM you on this. Yes, TealScript is FANTASTIC, but apparently there are problems on . . . you guessed it . . . the T5.

I'd have to see what apps are in the "package." More in the PM (There's no need to make everyone's eyes roll on here . . . they know how I can go on about Tealpoint!!).

fnagle:

Thanks for posting the link.

I got a kick out of hearing the T5 described as "elegant" and "sexy" with a "gorgeous display." Que Mango! :p

I replayed 3 times, and apparently all she did was hit two outside buttons and the left arrow button to get the reset. The quick cut-away was hilarious!! Call the Fire Department!!

She obviously knew NOTHING about the unit - and unlike the famous tape of Windows crashing at a Gates symposium, edited out were the "OH! It's gone blankey blankey!"

There's an old musician joke that if you want a slight distortion in a guitar amp's "clean channel," just buy a Peavey. Don't know why that shot into my head . . . . must remember not to mix the Danish Bleu Cheese spread with tequila . . . . . .

I got a chance to play with a T5 at the local CompUSA store today. It's a little larger than I thought it would be but it was light and thin and really felt more like a Clie than a Palm.

I'm sure the screen is nice but this unit only had a white screen showing no matter what button I pressed. I even took the stylus and did a soft reset and still got nothing but the white screen. I could hear the screen taps registering but nothing else. I've seen Palm's that were screwed up by people fooling with them at a store display but never anything like this. There was a T3 right next to it with about a hundred dummy entries in every PIM section that people had put in while trying it out and it was working fine. Gives me pause about how resistant OS 5.4 is to people just hitting the wrong buttons at the wrong time.

Jim,

Next time in CompUSA you may want to just do a "hard reset" since there is "nothing" synced with the unit. Might give you an opportunity to "play" a little more.

Seeing that I'm now living in Peru, I haven't seen a T5 yet. And prices on the models they do have are "outrageous" due to import duties of 30%. Add local taxes (19%) and you can see why I won't invest in a new Palm anytime soon.

Having lived in California and Florida, I certainly miss Fry's, CompUSA and all the other stores that cater to my "electonics" vice.

Regards,

fnagle / Frank

P.S. That unit may have been the one seen on CNet :D
