tune ups spark plugs ford escort 93?

i have a 93 escort. my husband and i bought new spark plugs for it today and put them in. now the car idles very hard and stalls out at lights or stop signs if we sit too long. we have checked and rechecked the wires going from the distributor cap and to the plugs they are all on nice and snug. what else could be wrong. before we changed the plugs she just ran hard. the cutting off is a new problem.
what might the issue be and how do i fix it

we know that but money is very tight for us
what gap
he removed one plug and replaced it then put the wire on. not saying he didnt cross them but is there anything worse it could be.

hes taking it to precision auto in the morning just wondering what else it could be that would be easier to fix thanks guys
 
Try replacing the spark plug wires also. You need to give it a complete tune up for it to be an actual "tune up". Air filter, Oil, Wires, etc.
 
what is very common is when installing the new spark plugs is that the electrode part that little part on the way in bends very easy and there is going to be a very bad idle if these happens you have to take them all out and recheck the gap is the correct for these car and you may find one or more that are bend just be very carefull when you install them good luck!
 
most likely you have plugged the wires wrong. you have the fire order wrong. the only other problem can be if you gap the spark plugs very too off. good luck.
 
sounds like the timing got messed up or you mixed up the wires. you need to see if the distributor cap was rotated when you changed the wires, you can mark it with a pen where it sits now and then slowly rotate it a little while its running and see if it runs better. also you need to check to make sure the wires are right. there should be a diagram under the hood depicting the firing order. if you have the number one wire going to the number two cylinder this could be it. and it runs because you have most right but maybe a couple wrong and this would explain this as well. try these things as by your description this is most likely the 2 things that could have happened and it wont cost any money to try both
