I love Volleyball

My period is here, and I've never worn a tampon before. It sounds stupid, but I'm just not ready to try one. I have volleyball tryouts tomorrow, and I don't think a pad is going to work with spandex and a thong. So would it be weird if I just wore shorts? I know I'll need to start using tampons for games and stuff if I get on the team though.
Also, I'm a freshman but I've played volleyball before. I'm not super good though. Anyway do they usually make you play with the JV/Varsity people at tryouts? I get so nervous playing with the older girls because they are really good and intimidating.
One last thing - I'm pretty solid in passing and setting, and my hits aren't that consistent but they are all right I guess. And I can overhand serve. Is it bad I don't have a skill that I'm especially good at, like I don't know what position I'd play? Thanks so much
