Trying to use my TV as a computer monitor.?

When I stream movies from the internet from my laptop it plays them great, but I tried hooking my laptop to my tv (using my tv as a monitor) and the video lags. I tried hooking it up VGA and also S-video and same thing each way. Why does this happen, and how can I fix it?

i have been having a similar problem. first off on a laptop it will be hard because of the limited video capability's. but depending on the TV some are just not set up to handle computer images. on my TV set up i can watch movies all day long with great picture but text shows blurry and almost unreadable. i have not found a good setting anywhere to fix this
