I read this book a few years ago, and I really liked it, but I forgot the name. I think it's a pretty old book, maybe published in the middle 1900s...
The book is about a ten year old named Mary who goes to her grandmother's house in the country. She's really bored and wishes she could be somewhere else. She makes friends with a black cat called Tib, and he leads her to a broomstick hidden under a pile of leaves. Taking it, she does many chores with it until she comes across some strange flowers in the woods. She picks up one, and some juice falls into her hand. When she touches the broom with the juice, the broom comes to life and takes Mary and Tib to an academy for witches and wizards. Mary pretends to be a student to the headmistress to avoid being dubbed a trespasser and turned into a frog. While taking a tour, Mary notices a strange book and steals it. When she finally rides the broom back to her house, she realizes that Tib is missing, and realizes the headmistress kidnapped him. She sneaks back at night and finds her cat as a specimen for experiments. The headmistress finds her, but she manages to escape.
That's all I remember. It's a really good book, and I would really like to read the book again. Unfortunately, I have forgotten the title, so whoever remembers the book, please answer. I think the title was The _____ Broomstick. I think the author's name is Mary something. Thanks again!
