The book was set in the future and this girl moves out to this place (I think it was a village or something small like that). Her new house is just outside the village. She finds this girl on the brink of dying on the step of her new house and she helps her for a while. I forgot what happens after that, but the whole thing is based on genetic mutation or selection (or something like that). I remember that she travels to all these other weird places with someone, and one of those places is really religious. And I think there was something about cows with strawberry flavoured milk, I think.
