Trying to connect ps3 with ntl cable modem!?!? please help!?

i link up ps3 and ntl modem via ethernet cable and then test connection on the ps3 and it says obtain IP address Failed

The attempt to obtain an IP address timed out
Please help
 
plug it all in then try turning the modem of for 30 seconds then back on. that's what i have to do with my xbox sometimes
