I haven't owened a 4x4 before. I like to go exploring and rock collecting in the country and around old mines which can involve rugged dirt roads and fairly steep inclines and declines on hills. I'd like to find a used Jeep so I don't have to worry if it gets scratched. Wranglers might be more than I need as I don't plan on crawling over rocks and I know they can be expensive even for a used one. I'm considering a 1998-2001 Cherokee due to its smaller size, but a 2001-2004 Grand Cherokee would work too. Would a Liberty be comparable for what I need? I think Libertys might get a bit better gas mileage. I've heard that the newer Patriots would not be rugged enough for what I have in mind. Any advice about transmissions, since Jeep offers 4x4s that you can have engaged all the time (e.g. Quadratrac) or you can engage only when wanted (Selectrac). I may use the car around town for errands every now and then to Home Depot since I also work on my house. Any advice you can offer would be appreciated since I'm a novice at this.
