Trying New Approach

So far I have had limited success with acid reflux. I deal with mostly nighttime reflux. Early on I had some success lifting the bed way up and getting weight way down but couldn't live like that (married, so I'm suppose to sleep in different room? no way). Had limited success with PPI's, about 5 months completely free of reflux till I got sick and then it came back with a vengence. I'm currently stopping the PPI and replacing it with Pepcid. I'm going to take two new approaches. First I'm going to see a sleep doctor to see if Sleep Apnea may be playing a hand in my problems (I doubt it but going to check anyway). Second I'm going to switch my high blood pressure med. and see if that has any effect. I'm sure my new approaches will fail just like most of my other approaches but I'll let you know if anything good happens.

Hey Neddy:

Keep us posted about your progress and how Pepcid works for you. I tried Pepcid twice and, though it is a newer H2 blocker, I have not found it better than Zantac. So, I am back to my 150 mg Zantac twice a day for now.

I am sure you have read about rebound after stopping the PPI's and will be ready to deal with it. I think mine lasted about two months and I am now dealing with the "real" symptoms of reflux I had before I ever started on the PPI's in the first place.

The other thing that has helped is cutting down on the carbs as I work through the rebound.

Good luck!

I just cannot accept that this is just something that just happens. There must be a reason or cause.

It is weird and frustrating process. For some unexplainable reason, I had pretty bad heartburn last night (maybe the vitamins I took with dinner) and today after lunch but not dinner. I have not done anything different and, in fact, probably broke the "rules" a bit more while I was on vacation last week. I cannot always predict when I'll have heartburn, when my stomach will produce more acid and/or when that LES will or will not close shut to keep the acid from refluxing. I know there are reasons for all this, I just cannot always predict when I am going to have reflux. I am pretty much back to my usual restricted diet and still had reflux last night and after lunch. Yet, not even a little bit tonight. Go figure!
