Truffles in the Northwest?

Hey all- a friend of my Mom's was walking her dog recently- the dog
starting digging a little, and found what is believed to be a truffle.
My Mom's friend took it to the UW, where it was confirmed. A local
restauranteur offered her 75 dollars for it, but she declined as she
would rather share it with her friends. After doing a little reading,
I see that they can be found here on the west coast. I guess they like
fir trees, which are plentiful around here! And German Shepherds are
known to be good for sniffing them out, so I guess I'll see if I can
train our girl. Aanyone ever have a truffle from the NW? Was it as
good as the European ones?

I've had northwest truffles, but they fell short of the ethereal
experience I was anticipating.

Here's a link to the online version of the Oregonian with a
story from late March about a large truffle which the Portland
restaurant Higgins bought for $80.

There was someone who used to post here whose nym suggested he
was in the truffle foraging business in - I think - eastern Oregon,
but
I haven't seen that poster here in several years.
