True life biopics.

What good (and reccomendable) biopics have you seen that have impressed you and done a good job in portraying the person in focus.

I particularly enjoyed 'Sylvia' based on American poet Sylvia Plath and I liked 'Enid' and 'Fantabulousa' which were TV movies.

Yours?

:)

I really enjoyed the one on Marie Lloyd starring Jessie Wallace.

Three of my favourite films are The Al Jolson Story and Jolson Sings Again starring Larry Parks as Jolson. Also The Glen Miller Story staring James Stewart. All three are very Hollywood musical, but great films.

Are you going to watch any of those biopics on this week that I found for you Moly?

'Reach For The Sky' is a rollocking good watch, with Kenneth Moore in fine form as Douglas Bader.

'Man On The Moon' with Jim Carrey as Andy Kaufman is superb. Carrey is amazing.

I wanted to like Man On The Moon but found it really ard to get into. I think the problem was other than for his stint on Taxi and he had a wrestling match with Jerry Lawler I don't know anything about him. What I saw in this film I wasn't left wanting to find out more.

Man On The Moon is great, if only for the great ending. I have shown that movie to a few people and it has left them wondering "what the hell?!" when they see it. Typical Andy humour I suppose!

I have never seen or know anything of Harvey Milk, but I did enjoy Milk with Sean Penn. The ending is quite sad though.

Lust for Life, Kirk Douglas as Vincent van Gogh is a great film.

Raging Bull, about the boxer Jake laMotta is a classic.

There's two to be getting on with as well!

One of my favourites. Superb acting.

Plus, I'd vote again for Milk. Sean Penn is just excellent.

I hate to say it, and I know it didn't get great reviews at the time, but I really enjoyed Factory Girl.

There's a different biopic about Vincent Van Gogh on Sky Arts 1 (also in HD) next Friday at 1pm.

Vincent and Theo. (1990)
Directed by Robert Altman and a relentless lead performance from Tim Roth (Lie To Me)

La Vie en Rose is a great French biopic about the life of singer Edith Piaf

Sophie Scholl: The Last days is a really interesting German film about the last days of German student Sophie Scholl, who along with her brother and a few frienRAB created leaflets against the Nazi regime and sent them around Munich university.

Not if you ask 'The Crickets'. They were very angry when they saw it, as it's pretty much a work of complete fiction. Sonny Curtis wrote a song called 'The Real Buddy Holly Story' in response.

I really loved Iris (about Iris Murdoch) - great performances from Dame Judy Dench and Jim Broadbent.

The Temptations, about the Motown group and based on only original member Otis Williams book was about the best biography of a group I've ever seen.

There are quite a few minor biography films that turn up on True Movies every so often.

The Last Emperor, directed by Bernardo Bertolucci is a stunning film about Pu Yi, the final ruler of Imperial China. While not 100% accurate (he never had any sexual contact with any of his wives), is an overall magnificent portrayal of a person who was the Emperor of China at the age of four, and a gardener fifty years later.
