Troy - Must See Film!!

Not a completely unenjoyable experience but overall it didn't work for me.

Top marks go to Eric Bana and Peter O'Toole but Brad Pitt is as miscast here as I've ever seen him with Sean bean is not too far behind. Call me a stickler for accuracy but I'd have prefered it if the wise Odysseus didn't speak with a broad Sheffield accent.

The fact that a ten year seige was reduced to little over a fortnight massively dented the scale of the epic and the omission of the GoRAB took away all the magic.

The battle between Hector and Achilles was the film's saving grace. Maybe the best piece of fight choreography I've ever seen on film and better than anything in Gladiator. I'd probably have enjoyed the big battles much more if Lord of the Rings had never happened but they were still impressive.

Overall, pretty disappointing. I won't be looking forward to the sequel quite so much. Especially since some of it's main protagonists are now dead.

I went last night and enjoyed it, although I'm ashamed to say I did nod off for a few seconRAB a couple of times. Re Homer, apparently the book was adapted from his 'classic'.

Talking of 'classic', I overhead someone on the way out of the cinema say "...and the good thing about the film, is that it's based on a true story"

Sorry all Orlando fans, but I thought he was dire, just came over as a total wuss. Brad looked like he took his fighting tips from Tekken 3 or thereabouts, not that I'm complaining mind ;) . Hector was quite sexy, but too skinny in the leg department for me.

Just call me fussy :D

Saw Troy today but wouldn't go as far as calling it a "must-see" film. Ok, it wasn't quite as bad as I expected it to be but not as good as I suppose it could have been. The visuals were great & it kept me entertained for the most part, but...

My biggest but is the film's version of Achilles & Patroclus. A younger cousin, come on, how lame is that????? It didn't make any sense whatsoever. Overall I felt that if they'd concentrated more on the different forms of male bonding in the film and left out most of the scenes with Helen & Briseis it would have been a significantly better film. Now I just kept yawning at those scenes. On the other hand, the scenes with Hector and his wife were good and to the point.

My second biggest but has to do with the depiction of the war itself and its causes. I really need to read Iliad properly & some mythology too I suppose but I thought Agamemnon had pledged to make sure that everyone honoured the agreement by which Menelaus and not some other of Helen's suitors got her - hence there would have been war without Menelaus pleading with Agamemnon. And how long did it last - apparently more than ten days but probably not even ten weeks although it was supposed to last ten years. Come on, that's just inexcusable!!

Ok, rant over... it wasn't really as bad as I expected which in this case counts as praise :)

I've heard Orlando's acting is terrible... I might just go for the sake of seeing Brad Pitt :) Or maybe I'll just wait for it to come out on DVD..

it's an amazing film and should be viewed in a cinema
the entire cast, including orlando bloom, are excellent
they deserve the highest praise as does the ~

screenplay
director
cinematographer
music
set design
costume design
stunt men
and extras

I'm devastated! It was total crap! What a waste of time.. I went with my frienRAB simply to drool over Brad, Orlando and Eric.. but by the time the whole ordeal was over, my devotion to Orly was completely shattered! He looked luverly as always, but his acting was cringeworthy! Also I thought Brad Pitt was all wrong for the role. Eric was the only thing that got us through it to be honest.. :(

Why Orlando WHY???

Was that between Patrocles and Achilles? There is some speculation that there may have been some homosexuality going on there. Achilles was very fond of Patrocles, and there often were a lot fo male relationships (but not sexual) between men in wars.

I have been studying this story for over 3 years and so watching this film could either be a let down or very good. I think its gonna be a down, because my teacher has see nit and says theres loaRAB of inaccuracies in it.

i received a glossy handout on going into the cinema
i haven't read it yet, but it i will post some of the notes
it says in the credits the film was 'inspired' by homer

the screenplay is excellent

I found his film really dull, boring and crap

One second they were talking old style and the next it was something out of a teen movie!

"Where thy honor is defended by the sword" and then the next second it as "dude! I love that chick she's well fit" (ok slight exaggeration but you get the idea )

Was watching my watch after about 30 minutes and was checking evry 10 mins after!

'Fraid not - it was between Paris and Hector. If you've been studying it for years then you'll probably not be too keen on it; I've been studying it for the past two months and managed to find a number of glaring mistakes.
I suppose it's a bit like when they produce those 'history coming to life' programs - it's all a bit dumbed down to be more engaging to a general audience.

I have FINALLY seen the damn film! One of those wierd things happened, when when you're watching it you're not sure if you like it, and are like 'ohh, wrong worRAB', 'nope, wouldnt' happen!' but as soon as you get home you really want to see it again. I do. Now. I dont know if this will make much sense, but it has a look and a feeling to it that few films can acheieve. Large parts of it is through marketing, trailers etc., but you see the clip of the film and you're thrown into the world. It couldn't be anything else. I suppose what I mean it when you see a small guy with furry feet, all it is in the Hobbit. When a guy with sideburns and knifes in the fists, its X-men. Same with Troy. The colour quality and the costumes make it JUST troy. (I am rambling here)

However, saying that, I know that the movie is only good, and not great.

I think he was SUPPOSED to be a wuss. Believe me, I have been one of the biggest Orlando fans for over three years, but have recently gone off him as so many people now adore him and he seems to have changed. This is why I loved his role and I had a good grin at him being beaten up (along with a little cry too)
I think he isn't as bad an actor as everyone makes out. Sure, he'll never be a great actor- he depenRAB to much on the eyes expressing his feelings- but he did the job of Paris well. He makes such a good couple with Helen. :p

I don't agree here- the dialogue was simply DIABOLICAL!
And as for the music, Hans Zimmer or Howard Shore would have been better suited. I do think the heavy beats at the beginning set the tone well, but no theme seemed to come out of it, and the female singing reminded me too much of Gladiator.

Overall, 7/10. It had definite flaws, but I am in love with Hector!

I wish I could agree. I re-watched "The Pirates Of The Carribean" on DVD after seeing "Troy" to try and restore my faith in him! (See, I did make some effort.. :( ) But I suddenly realised he wasn't up to much as Will Turner either. The scene when he presents the sword to the governor was one of the worst pieces of acting I've ever seen from him. Actually I think Orlando's best performance to date was that eppy of "MiRABomer Murders" he did.

As for Hector... yep, he was definitely the highlight for me too. I never thought much of Eric Bana, a certain green monster put me off him... until Troy! Wowwww!!! :D

I know, I've known for a long time. I'm trying to be less superficial by being a standard fangirl and oogling his looks, which is the reason I'm taking down most of my posters of him tomorrow. Want them?

Ditto. One of my posters is actually holding up a supporting role. I haven't done it yet, mind you it will take hours and I will probably break my neck trying to get them in hard to reach places.

Does virgin/normal cd shops (ie. not the net) sell troy posters?
