Trouble with paint and top coat?

So here's the prob. I build custom cabinets and interior trim and use a white water based semi gloss latex paint, and as we all know its usually a bit tacky when dry, I need something better but oil is no good because it turns yellow in no time. So I am using a top coat lacquer but it reacts poorly to the water paint and drys kinda soft and scratches easily. So I tried Benwood® Stays Clear® Acrylic Polyurethane Low Lustre 423 as recommended by a local supplier, but is not covering very well it looks like water on top of oil. I also tried a polyurethane but it too yellows. I need something full proof. I have wasted 500 on materials and paint by now and am loosing patience. I need help please. I spray in my shop, no spray booth but have good ventilation.
Thanks, Rob
