Wait a minute, I thought it came with 1G memory preinstalled??! I opened the memory slot and i can see the card is physically there

I am taking a quantum leap from my rusty ol Pebl, and I know this is 1st gen so ther's gonna be some glitches, but I was able to take a shot 15 minutes ago.

Now I get that message. after I rebooted the thing too.

UPDATE!: I had the phone plugged into my macbook via usb when i got the error message. I just unplugged it, and it takes the pics fine now. my bad?

it seems that when phone is plugged in to charge or to a pc the camera doesnt work probably due to the fact that only one thing can access the micro sd card and when you plug something in, G1 thinks it teh computer

yeah that makes sense, too bad the o.s. didn't pick up on that and tell us exactly what was going on so we don't freak out and starting all sorts of diferent threads

unrelated but worth mentioning: i just d/l'd "Shutter Speed" from the market, which puts you way in control of the g1's camera, iso and all that.....

when you plug your phone into a computer, it disables reading from and writing to the sdcard, while your computer has it mounted. it's a common limitation or mp3 players and smart phones.

I would like to say i had the same problem. except! this time i have tried all what you guys have said. its not plugged in to any computer and the sd card is physically there.
it still says "please insert sd card in order to use the camera" I still havent found the problem on how to fix it. i reformatted and everything and the problem still excist.
any help would be quite good =]

Update FIX!: If you have tried all of these things One last thing you need to do! Mount your G1 to any PC and check the DCIM Folder of the SD Card. Make sure that in the DCIM there's a Folder Named "camera" if not just add it and it will certainly fix this problem!!!

I continue to have problems taking pictures. Everytime I want to take a picture, I have to take out the sd card and reinsert it before it will allow me to take a picture. So, I can not take pictures back to back without taking out the sd card. I have a camera folder already and I am not plugged in to the computer on charger. Any ideas???

I had the same problem for a while. Check that the little slot is closed tight also you can go to menu in the main screen then settings and then sd storage and wait for it to load everything. If it doesn't load unmount it and then take it out and put it back. I did that and its worked ever since.

When I go to sd storage it shows i have 7, 572mb total space and 4, 785mb or available space. Is that what you mean by wait for it to load everything. After fiddling around with the sd card and taking that first picture, the message "please insert sd card before using camera" always pops up. Also, when I preview my pictures some or all pictures don't display. I get a symbol in the box inside with a exclamation point. The slideshow displays all of my pictures. I was not having this problem originally but I did not use the camera alot in the beginning either.

Update: I spoke with T-mobile tech support. It was suggested that I complete a factory reset. My camera works fine now and I can see my pictures from my sd card. The next few hours will be spent getting my settings back, redownloading programs etc.. fun, fun, fun

Same here, as I don't have the standard G1 data service. Instead, I just re-created and reformatted the FAT16 partition and it's worked perfectly. It might be sufficient to just reformat, but I noticed a difference before and after re-creating the partition.

Before --
device: /dev/mmcblk0p1; start: 1; end: 984; blocks: 991747+; id: 6; system: FAT16

After --
device: /dev/mmcblk0p1; start: 1; end: 984; blocks: 991840+; id: 6; system: FAT16

To make sure it wasn't the files that came with the microSD, I copied them all back to no effect. Weird, eh? Where did I get an extra 93 blocks from?

I have reformatted my phone and it's still not working. I must of deleted something in one of the folders. Can anyone verify what files are in what folders?

I found a weird glitch in my sd card. I took a picture and viewed the picture by taking out the microSD card and plugging it into my computer. For some reason it was corrupted and I tried deleting things on my phone. For some reason none of the things I deleted on my phone actually got "deleted." It came back after I deleted it for some reason. So I backed up all the music and pictures (except for the corrupted ones) and reformatted my card. After that my camra worked and saved correctly every single time after that. I think the corrupted files caused some of the problems and a possibility that the program Power Manager caused some problems because everything in that folder was "corrupted". Just my .02 and it should fix most of your SD/Camra problems.

Hey all, I have had my G1 for about 2 months now and JUST started getting the SD card message today...after I loaded memory for lemmings and it wiped out EVERYTHING...all good, i will own my stupidity in that one. Anyway, what slit are you all talking about to jiggle the SD card?

yep just noticed the same thing about the sd card message, just started happening after the lemmings app.. just took the card out and put it back in, and that solved the problem.( temporary fix )

I didn't want to create a new thread because I'm having the exact same problem and I've literally tried everything EXCEPT reformatting, which I don't know how to do and I wonder how that would effect my phone in any way. Any thoughts on how to fix this problem? I have the SD card that came with the phone.

I had the exact same problem with my first G1, I called and let them know that it was doing that. they sent me a new phone, and it did it again. I switched to a 4g sd card and haven't had the problem. It does take a few tries for the phone to read the new sd card though..so don't freak out at first if it doesn't work.
