Treo Switchers, how's iPhone?

I currently have a Treo 650, I'm not tied to any corporate email (I use Gmail) and am considering the switch to the iPhone. I have stopped by an Apple store and I love the device, I just want to be sure that I'm not sacrificing too much usability (here's looking at you MMS) in the exchange.

For former Treo users that have switched, how has it been? Any regrets?

I know iPhone has Calender and Notes apps, I'm a frequent calender and task reminder user. Have you guys found iPhone to provide these features pretty accurately?

Thanks for taking a moment to help out!

(It's notable that I don't use a Mac, so the tie-ins with iCal etc. are not so useful for me)

no regrets so far. None.

Best thing ever so far: When something crashes on the iPhone (which is rare) it just quits that app and takes you back to the home screen. On Treo, it will reset the whole damned phone.

All the standard PIM features are adequate...just about as much as Palm OS is. There is no "week view" in the calendar, also the recurring appointments functions aren't as flexible as Palm OS. Those would be the biggest differences I guess, and they are pretty minor.

As a previous 650 user, I've switched and you'd have to put a gun to my head to make me pick up that brick again.

A few things, it's much cleaner to look at and easier to clean. I'm sure as a fellow 650 user you know how it gets all gunked up and you really can't clean it. For email, it's like night and day. iPhone hands down. Browsing, iPhone hands down. My Treo seemed to crash upwards of 10x a day easily. It would also lose information or duplicate it for unknown reasons.

Presently the third party apps are nice, but the only thing I really miss is the password management application that I had.

Crashing into the main menu is good to hear. I believe my Treo has completely lost its head, resetting sporadically/for no reason by itself a good three times a day.

I really think I'm about ready to make the switch, if only the student discount applied to iPhone...

Thinking about the switch too here.... I have about 6 months left on my Verizon Treo 700w contract, and tempted to get an iPhone early...

The sluggishness of the 700w and need to open the stupid case to reset so many times is painful...especially while driving.

I just hope the "basic" Outlook features are adequate enough...

Here's my Treo history:
600 > 650 > 755p

Here's what I miss:
* Tethering to Laptop (especially the EVDO speeds of the 755p)
* Password Management App (SplashID)
* Bluetooth syncing (but with Treos it wasn't that handy because it was slow as hell)

After almost 2 weeks on the iPhone, I don't really miss the Treos. EDGE is more than fast enough for me when I'm not near any wifi.

I've had the 600, 650, 680, 700p, 700w, and 750 (need help don't I).

I have the iPhone now and love it. I doubt I'll ever have another Palm product. Something that the included functions actually work and don't have continuous problems with. No regrets at all.

However you need to look at what functions are important to you. For example if you MUST have tethering, then the iPhone isn't for you since it doesn't do this at all. But the functions it does have are great.

I am an old Treo 600/700p user (and also had the Windows Mobile XV6700).

The iPhone runs circles around all of these devices. It is just so intuitive and easy to use.

In particular, the iPhone is MUCH better out of the box for email and web browsing.

Palm has not done anything useful since buying Handspring and Windows Mobile is a buggy mess. The Blackberry is stable but 5 years behind the iPhone in terms of interface.

I had a 650 (well still have it, needs to go on eBay), and like everyone else on this thread, I'm not going back.

I ultimately got tired of spending hours experimenting with combinations of apps and rom tools to get rid of the frequent crashes but retain the functionality I wanted. With an 8GB SD card, PocketTunes, and a headphone adapter I managed to get similar functionality as the iPhone (plus great battery life) at the cost of a few reboots a day. With the iPhone, things "just work".

I purchased an iPhone after a two month bender of trying various phones (thank you for your generous return policy, AT&T). I kept going back to the Treo after using these alternatives for a while. I first gave the Blackjack a shot, but the limited WM Smartphone apps and janky Bluetooth weren't acceptable. Surprisingly, I found the battery life to be fine once I disabled 3G. I had the N75 for a weekend, and its battery life was an issue, combined with a horrible email client and no suitable way to listen to music (no A2DP, only one headset is available for the awkward Pop Port) made me return it quickly. My last experiment was the 8525, which matched the Treo in bulk but had shoddy battery life and required a lot of fiddling to get the settings just right. I also realized at this point that I wasn't getting along with Windows Mobile, mostly due to the lack of detail (no profiles on PocketPC, muting the audio only mutes some sounds, "notifications" are as annoying as modals on Windows, programs don't actually ever quit, and it's SLOW!), all of which were implemented logically on the Treo.

For my needs, the iPhone apps hold up. The email is fine, though I wouldn't mind IMAP IDLE (like Chatter) or better attachment handling. The PIM apps are a little weak. Although the contacts and calendar are excellent, the notes app doesn't sync with Outlook and there's no To-Do app. I didn't use those too much on the Treo, so it's not a big deal for me. The music app is brilliant, even if you ignore the eye candy that is Coverflow. Actually, I find Coverflow annoying as I leave my phone on its side in the car (horizontal orientation activates Coverflow) and the music control buttons are only available in vertical orientation.

The crown jewel is the browser. Anyone who has used more than the pages on the palm.com portal knows that Blazer is very limited. Safari is so much faster at rendering and actually renders tables and deals with Javascript properly. And of course, an errant page that causes it to crash (which shows up less often than in Blazer) will drop you to the home screen instead of forcing a reboot. I wouldn't mind if Flash support was added, though most sites aren't Flash-heavy.

I do miss the physical keys a little. I have found that my typing speed is a draw between the two, and even better on the iPhone when I'm not trying to be so accurate with my keypresses and let the autocorrect do its thing. If the iPhone had some sort of tactile feedback (twitch the vibe motor when a key registers maybe?) I'm sure I could be even more efficient.

As for battery, the 650 was a workhorse, and the iPhone matches it. So far today I've logged about ten minutes of calls, half an hour of browsing on WiFi, and about four hours of music. The battery gauge still reads over 3/4. While some are up in arms over the non-replaceable battery, I'd like to point out that I've had my Treo's original battery for over two years, and it still holds a charge like its from day 1. I charged my Treo nightly and used it moderately during the day, checking mail constantly and using it for a couple of hours of music or Audible, plus a few calls. At a couple of points in its life, I had to go through the "Battery Reset" song and dance to make the charge meter behave, though I've never had it overreport the amount of battery left. I suspect that the iPhone will hold up much the same way, and that I will be out of contract and probably looking for its replacement when it starts to hold less than the rated charge.

I'm still hoping that Apple will release a real SDK, rather than rely on web apps and the work of hackers to add new functionality. There is so much potential in this little machine, and as recent events have shown there's no shortage of developers willing to extend it.

I dont have either phone but i got a Smarkphone and used a iphone plenty of times.... Smart phones have more capabiltys because of applications ect. The iphone is killing smart phones because of how smooth it operates! wich is nice when u move from a smartphone, If i wasnt broke i would go buy a iphone.....

Im So sick of the phone lagging to asnwer a call

Andy Ihnatko says, "Treo-jockeys have been mocking the fact that the iPhone lacks a mechanical thumbpad. Well, here's my response: 51 words per minute, suckers. On my third day. With just one index finger. The best I can do on a Treo with both thumbs is 27... after two years' experience."

His review's pretty interesting, it's here

I've had a treo 600, treo 650, cingular 8125 and the iphone is better than all of them. I love it and don't miss any of those phones. As others have said, there are a few small things that I miss a little like being able to insert my cursor into a certain spot and make a correction when typing, copying and pasting, etc... On the iphone all I can do is use the back button and erase everything and start over if I noticed a mistake in spelling or something, but thats not too big of a deal. The safari browser and the gorgeous screen make up for that. The outlook email is good as it was on my other phones, the calendar works for me, I think that the notes is really convenient to use. I like the maps. I don't text at all, so I'm not sure what all the talk is on that. I would rather talk to someone anyway if I'm not emailing. And even though my other phones had mp3 players, I just didn't use them much. For some reason, maybe because its an ipod, I use the heck out of itunes now on my phone. I worked in my yard for hours yesterday and had my earphones plugged in my ears and it just made the time go by for me. I did have to turn the volume up to max while riding my ztrac lawnmower-that thing is very loud, but it made it alot more enjoyable. I sold my 8125 on ebay and don't miss it a bit. I'm an iphone convert now forever. This iphone does everything that I need while at the same time its so simple to use that any moron could pick it up and have at it. Apple did an excellent job on this phone and included apps that are really needed and used.

by then most bugs should be worked out and ,from what Ive read, some additional features will probably be added. I like that auto update feature

Actually you can insert the cursor anywhere you want. Use your finger and hold it on the spot you want to insert. A magnifying glass should appear and you can make your corrections.

I suggest you watch the iPhone Welcome video. You can dnload it from the Apple site.

BTW, my wife has been a 650 user for close to 2 years and she told me she would drop it like a hot potato for my iPhone.

OMG, I just tried it. It works great! Thats why I love this forum. Thanks for the tip. I guess I've never tried that before because thats really a tight area without a stylus. But, using the fingers on the keyboard is really so very responsive and precise that I should have tried it. I think I would have to say that one other thing that I was missing was a stylus. Get your wife an iphone. I do love mine. I haven't been so excited about a gadget in a long time. I'm trying to convince my husband that he needs one too.
