Treo 650 or TX?

I've been watching for both as I want to get something way more performant than my Z22. The only problem with the Treo is its 320x320 screen and also it doesn't have wi-fi built-in. And with the TX, no cellphone, no photo but big screeen, big memory.

Well... do you need a phone? Do you need a camera (it's good but not that good)? If you answered no to both of these then get the T|X. If you want those get the Treo 650.

Wifi is good but only works at access points and hotspots not everywhere. The Treo 650 along with the carrier's data program can get you access to the Internet everywhere.

G'luck man!

I'd recommend the Treo - having just recently lost mine due to an unfortunate water outing - I've lost some productivity as a result of going back to the my T5.

The keyboard actually makes inputting faster. And as Seth stated, WIFI is not prominent in many areas - guarantee that you'll have more web access from cellular towers then you will hotspots. Large screen would be an issue if you are planning on surfing as part of the daily ritual but the web is still not user friendly unless you've got a 15 inch laptop screen to work from.

I'd recommend the TX - then get a small & light cellphone (eg. secondhand SonyEricsson T610/T616) and link the two over Bluetooth. Got WiFi coverage? Use that - fast! Got no WiFi? Use Bluetooth & GPRS. Need SMS? Use the TX & Bluetooth.

The other thing is do you like thumb-keyboards? Yes=Treo, no=TX, I'm in the latter camp. (-:

Well... I have a laptop with 15 inches screen, but i want to access the internet principally from my home. I finally chosen the Treo, but can I access the internet from my bluetooth-enabled laptop? Or whatever the way I use, can I CONNECT TO THE INTERNET WITHOUT PHONE GPRS INTERNET?

As I understand it yes you can but I don't or never have connected in that fashion so I won't be of any help in that regard.

You must remember though that the Bluetooth speed is going to be tremendously slow as well. As I recall the BT spec is 33kps? or so which is not speedy.

If you have a wifi connection at home - and money is no object - then Enfora makes a wifi sled for the Treo.

This is my view too - I had a Treo 180 and now a TX with a small & light Smartphone. I take the phone everywhere but the TX only when I need it - save pocket space. Used to be a fan of the combined device but prefer to have two now.

WiFi is great - I can HotSync anywhere in the house - even walking around with the TX in my pocket...

I'd say there is no perfect solution to this problem...
...at present.

WiFi to me seems somewhat irrelevant except for a small number of users. WiFi hot spots are few and far between. I could be stood in the middle of a wood or on top of a hill and still get connected via blue tooth and my trusty V3 phone. As for the slow connection speed, it's plenty quick enough for picking up email and logging into text based web pages, which is all the Palm is capable of doing.

I'm still of the opinion that the smart phone is not the right solution (although I have a feeling that is the way things are going to go).

Personally, I'm quite happy with my T5 (still think the TX was a retrograde step).

It really just depends on where you live---that's the ultimate decision when judging whether or not WI-FI internet access is the best choice for your net needs. I live in NYC, and there is always a hotspot somewhere, even when you are unaware. Most of the areas I visit on a regular basis, doctor's office, work, school, coffee shop, home have WI-FI hotspots. Sometimes you even pick up a signal on a open street without even knowing where it's from!

I am a student from the UK and wireless hotspots are few and far between, even in london BUT I have a TX and it works excellently with the few I can find and my home LAN. I can also link it via IR or Bluetooth to my phone to do calls and SMS and I really like it. It is my firts PDA and I am very pleased. It is also cheap and well supported and easy to use. Here it retails for a miniumum of ?185

ah well i have a motorola which is about 3 years old and was only like ?70 at the time so its probably under ?50 now and i just keep it in my bag with BT on and then use my palm. No worries as you can actually dial all the numbers etc... from the palm itself. In my opinion doing this would be cheaper than buying a treo as a TX on www.dabs.com is ?187.98 with free delivery whereas treos are much more

Yeah, but I CAN'T carry my phone everywhere and it doesn't have BT. And the worse is that the TX is 1 cent cheaper than the almighty treo, but you get way more bang for the buck. I'll just have to wait up to Jan. 2007 so my contract ends. Just the right time to get enough money.
