Transmission ???: Scam or Reality...Dodge?

CAR/MODEL: 2003 Dodge Stratus SXT 4cyl.

BACKGROUND:
My husband had car troubles yesterday coming home from work and was barely able to make it to our exit on the highway, and park it. Today we walked over to where it was parked and it started and made it about 20 yards before it died again with the engine light on. Just stalled out quietly. I pushed the damn thing back into the parking spot.
We thought the serpintine belt or fan belt had finally let go, and caused the engine trouble (it was making fan belt noises a couple weeks back) and when we got a tow truck to the nearest auto shop by our apartment, we were told that it will be a transmission repair (replacing the solenoid pack and speed sensors) and will cost $1,000! God, we really can't afford that.

Here are my QUESTIONS: Looking up part prices I saw solenoids should go for under $200 and 2 speed sensors should be $50 total. (Does that sound right? I high-balled it). The part number is #5015646ac-right?). Also, how long should it take to repair these? $750 in labor...when I have seen people say this should take three hours tops? Is this a rip-off?

Thank you so much for your help, we would truly appreciate your opinion...
