Transmission problem with 2001 dodge caravan?

After we got the car scanned the code P1698 (coming from the transmission) said to perform powertrain verification.
The mechanic said that he doesn't know what to do next or what the problem is exactly. He said that the the code is coming from the transmission but he doesn't know if this is an actual transmission problem (i.e. not working etc.) or if this is a problem with the ECM.
If anyone can help me by shedding more light onto this situation I would really appreciate it.
The original problem was that there was an indication coming up that said to check the engine.

that code can be caused by a bad tcm unit also on it not functioning right, you need to to a transmission shop and let them scan it,they will know more of what to do on it,it probably wont be the ecm causing this to happen, good luck .

Find a more informed mechanic is my first thought.
You don't say what the original problem is.

If the transmission stopped shifting but did not blow up, the shift relay module that bolts to the side of the transmission may be faulty ($550). The other obvious source of the problem is the ECM itself, but there should be a trouble shooting/diagnosis confirmation procedure available to the mechanic. This would be the first thing to look at. It provides the signal to the shift relay module.

Problem is many mechanics are smart mechanically, but not so when it comes to electronics. I think that is the thing you are dealing with right now. It sounds like he is honest enough to admit he doesn't know what to do next, he may be relieved if you decide to take it to AAMCO or other experienced transmission shop in your area.

All it says is :
" Manufacturers control: Auxillry inputs
Aux outputs", whatever that means
That number is unique to the Chrysler code
