Has any of you guys with 07 six speed trannys have any mainshaft bearings fail? A buddy of mine had one fail on a 07 in florida, has 18000 miles on it. Dealer said it was common problem. My buddy uses Amsoil severe gear. When dealer found out he used Amsoil , dealer said that was the problem. Dealer said it is too thick dont lube bearings good enough. Give me your opinions please, or failures.

First, and most important, the dealer is a moron.

Secondly, I've read about it a few times on here and it's been known to be a bit of a problem on the 07 bikes. I have 23k on mine and no issues.

Knock on wood, 33,000 miles here and mines OK, as far as I know. I did have to do the primary chain tensioner as mine was too tight. I have heard that this can cause stress on the bearing.

Mine (traded in '07 FLHR) died at 31K and several folks I've talked to have also said yep, they're doing that. I also heard that HD changed the bearing type in '08 - just my $0.02...

Yes, it appears to be fairly common in the '07s. The plastic walls of this double-row ball bearing seem to be the weak link, but the replacement looks the same and future models use the same part. Maybe, hopefully, they improved it. I don't agree with your dealer about the heavy gear oil causing the problem. Ask him to provide evidence for his claim, as without it you can't link the two. I've used 85w140 and heavier (Redline SPH) since new and still do. If I thought it was a problem I wouldn't use it.

Mine started whining at about 16k but nobody could link it to the tranny at the time, and I blamed everything else (tire, belt, etc.)--but by 32k the noise increased and it started groaning. I reported the whine before the warranty expired and HD agreed to repair it in warranty even though it had expired 10 months before. Big job and I'm glad I didn't have to pay for it. If you must do this job consider the SE compensator upgrade, which should go in with no additional labor charge.
