Transmission Fluid Leak on a 96 Ford Explorer XLT?

My 1996 Ford Explorer XLT has a transmission fluid leak. I was checking fluids before driving home for the holidays, and noticed fluids on my power steering fluid cap. I had my dad check it when I got home and he said it looks/smells like transmission fluid. Is there anyway to fix this without a major overhaul or expense? I have an 18 month old daughter, so money is a little tight!!
