Transformers! Megatron = Optimus Prime?

I was just wondering,

since they can take on any shape, does that mean Barricade can copy a jet and be just like Starscream instead? and vice versa?

Then why the hell did they just not keep doing that?
Like if Optimus couldn't catch up with Megatron because he is such a slow poke, why didn't he just take on the form of a jet?

In the cartoons and such they were pretty much stuck with whatever they happened to be. Except for in the cartoon movie when Unicron was able to change them.

The real question is why the decepticons were bad ass things like tanks and jets, and the autobots choose to be GM vehicles

In the first few episodes of the cartoon, the Autobots did fly in robot form, just like the Decepticons. Then it was just Sideswipe/Sunstreaker.
