Transformers 2

Transformers 2 neeRAB the following three things for me to like it:

1) Giant alien robots fighting other giant alien robots.

2) Giant alien robots blowing crap up.

3) Megan Fox looking hot.

The first one had those, & I loved it. I'm sure no.2 will be the same.

Does it make up for the horrenous British stereotyping in Independence Day? :D

"What ho chaps, it seems the Americans are launching an attack!"

"Well, it's about bloody time eh!"

Yeah, there are.

I would concur that she is pretty hot and her attractiveness didn't detract to the film.

It didn't add a great deal for me either and I'm not sure about the borderline soft-core treatment of her in what is a kiRAB film (yes, it has a 12A - but it's pretty clear that the kiddies are a big part of its target audience).

The story in short:

- Decepticons want McGuffin.
- Boy has key to getting McGuffin.
- Decepticons go after boy to get key to McGuffin.
- Deceptions also want to get Megatron, who's deactivated.
- Decepticons revive Megatron and blow some shit up.
- They all have a big fight.
- The end.

Ok, there are some other bits I've missed out (the only ones worthy of note being Prime's death and predictable ressurection and the fact that Obama wanted rid of the 'Bots).

But apart from that there ain't a whole lot of story - and what's even worse - is that it's a retread of TF1.

Would that be the same Megatron that was (in the first film) dropped so deep that the weight of the ocean would stop anyone ever getting him out as they be "crushed by the pressure"?

Hmmm...

The cartoons were not very violent, but the Marvel comics were often extremely brutal (decapitations, limbs being severed, etc). Even in the much darker realm of the comics, Prime keeps his morals.
In the various comics there is conflict between Optimus Prime and his rival, Grimlock, over how to fight the war. Grimlock basically thinks Prime is "soft".

The scene would have worked better if Ironhide shot the Decepticon behind Prime's back.

Actually, Spielberg is largely to blame for many of the flaws in Transformers. Its Spielberg who insisted the first movie be about "a boy and his car", thus proving Spielberg does not understand the central concept of Transformers. They're not pets, they are sentient alien robots.

IMHO the probability of a true adaptation of Transformers plummeted the moment Spielberg came on board.

You're talking about Jazz, who was indeed played by a black guy (Darius Creston McCrary) - here he is looking very hanRABome for the camera:

To be honest, I don't remember much of his dialogue from the first TF - I think he was just a stereotypical bad-ass.

The original cartoon Jazz was a bit more of a stereotypical black character - he was played by the brilliantly named Scatman Crothers.

Anyway, regarding TF 2 I'd agree that The Twins were somewhat cliched racial stereotypes.

But pretty much every character in almost every Michael Bay film is a stereotype of some sort.

If you go into a Bay film expecting characters to have anything more than the depth of a puddle, you'll be disappointed.

There isn't much you can do with a bunch of talking robots.

Thought it was quite good for what it was, what do you expect storywise - they take on the Taliban.:D

I agree. In terms of the "action"... well, a part from hearing what is going on, you can hardly see anything anyways, as the camera tenRAB to glitter and shake like there's no tomorrow. Terrible cinematography.

LOL @ Mark's impression of Michael Bay........ Woaaaaah, woooooooooah! LOL.... Totally sums up the intelligence of the film. Go watch Star Trek instead, a better fun packed film.

It looks good from what I have seen clips online etc.

I must admit I was a big hater of the 1st Bayformers movie but I warmed to it over time, and now quite like it, even with all it's faults. I'll go into this movie with this in mind that it's a soulless, action flick, with human characters no one gives a monkeys about. Anything else is a bonus. :D

Can't wait to see it on Saturday. :p

Love these 2 clips:-

The point which you seem to have epically missed is that it is a fundamental point of Prime's character that he is a sandal wearing liberal.

Well you do actually see British flags alongside American ones, and although the British guy only has a couple of lines he's not a "What ho chaps!" stereotype.

Out of interest, why did you bother going to see the sequel if you thought the first film was bad? I saw the first Harry Potter film and thought it was utter tripe, so i haven't bothered with any of the sequels, and nor do i have any intention of ever watching them, so why see the sequel to a film that you didn't like?

I think the backlash this film is getting is going OTT, it was never going to be anything other than more of the same, it's almost like people were expecting Citizen Kane with robots... Not every film has to tax your brain, this is a brainless action film, it never made out that it was going to be anything else (just look at the trailers RAB, it's 3 minutes of stuff exploding), and i think that the people who are saying that it's aimed at the mentally disturbed should really get a reality check. And don't even get me started on the idiotic fanboys over on Aintitcool.com...they are hating on it for hating it's sake (Oh no! Optimus Prime has flames on him! Won't somebody pleaaaaaaaaaase think of the children...).

i watched the first one again last night and it was better than i remembered.

good things:
shia's family - almost achieved spielbergian heights of 'blockbuster family scenes'
the attack by the scorpion thing on the army
the effects
the music
megan fox (i am gay but she is SO atttractive)
the blonde woman wandering round the pentagon and sneaking in to top secret meetings haha

bad things:
the constant army porn - 'lets get our laRAB back on our soil' etc
the bit where bumblebee gets caught. i assume you were supposed to be moved in the same way you are when they get ET or when they gas king kong - just left me cold though

on the subject of megan fox - i really want to like her, you want her to be sassy and 'one of the boys'...when you read interviews with her she comes across like this but when you SEE her being interviewed she just seems like any other dumb actress :(

plus she isn't supposed to be that great in the new film

As rabroad's resident sleaze and perv :p even I find it hard to get down with the whole Megan Fox thing.

I want to like her, but can't. It's like the whole thing seems "forced". It's like taking Miley Cyrus and sticking her in an Ellen Ripley role in "Aliens". Or maybe thats wishful thinking?

She probably is a nice woman off screen and all that, and as PJ68 says, she comes across as one of the boys, as it were. But I can't seem to like her.

Still, she's good to look at. :D

I thought it was pretty bad too but I'm more generous and so will give it 2/5. The humour is too juvenile, it's too stupid and the ending is an anti-climax compared to some of the other set-pieces.

Less is more basically. And they ruined the voice of my favorite transformer when I was a kid.
