Transfer address book from old Palm to TX?

Hi,

Finally got a new Palm TX, had an older Palm...4 or 5 years old (don't know exact model?).

Anyways, love the TX! But all I need from my old Palm is to transfer the address book over to the TX.

I tried to Beam the address book from the old Palm to the TX last night, but it said the address look was lock-protected or something like that and wouldn't let me do it. So after that I was lost. Even though I've used that Palm for a few years I'm far from a Power user and was lost as to how to accomplish this after this.

There has got to be a simple way of doing this. Can anyone point me in the right direction on how I could do this?

Can I use the Palm Destop software to do this? They are both using Palm Desktop on the same PC to hotsynch, each with a different username.

Thanks!!

You should be able to beam your address book from the address book application on your 'old' Palm. Just simply open the address book app in your 'old' palm and select the "Record" section.
Step 1: Open the Address Book App, make sure that your have your Category showing as "ALL"

Step 2: Have your new T|X ready to receive a beam.

Step 3: On your 'old' Palm select "Record" and there you should see "Beam Category". Select "Beam Category" it should default to the "ALL" category that you have selected in Step 1. If it doesn't then you can beam each category separately.

If this doesn't work post a reply and there is a more in-depth way that it could be done.

Good Luck!

The file you would beam is AddressDB.pdb, but since the TX uses Contacts instead of Address Book, that probably wouldn't work. (You may have tried to beam the Address Book app itself, and that IS copy-protected.)

If you can "see" the old Palm's address book data in Palm Desktop, you can import it as an archive file. Open the old Palm's Palm Desktop address book, then go to File/Export and export it as a .aba file.

Make sure you have the same categories in the Contacts app on your TX that you had in the old Palm's Address Book.

Now open the TX's Contacts in Palm Desktop, then go to File/Import, and import the archive you just exported. The data should go to your TX at your next HotSync.

Edit: rbarkc's advice might work also. (I've never tried beaming address data from an older Palm to an OS 5 Palm.)

Cool...Thanks to both of you guys for the advice. I wil try it tonight.

Just one quick question.

"Have your new T|X ready to receive a beam."

How do I do that...is there anything other than having it on and near the old Palm that I need to do?

Thanks!

To receive a beam your Palm just simply needs to be on. By default it set to receive one. Just simply have your Palm you are beaming to in front of the Palm you are beaming from. They need to be within a foot or so. If your new T|X doesn't accept the beam you will have to toggle the setting. This can be found in the 'Preferences' and then the 'Power'. Set "Beam Receive" to 'On'.
You should be good to go.
