Hi all,

I was just wondering if there would be any possible things i could do to maintain a basic level of fitness and lose so weight whilst being assessed for a chronic back injury. I have already had x-rays and just had a CT scan today and waiting on the results being returned.

I have not done any sport for 3 weeks now and i am starting to get a bit flabby. Could i maybe use an exercise bike or a cross-training machine to burn so calories?!!??

I would really appreciate any suggestions!

Thank you so much for your help!!!

I belong to a gym, and while I can't use most of the machines there, I've found a few that are perfect for me. The rule of thurab is don't do anything that causes your spine to bear any weight (other than your own :D). I use the treadmill, but not the elliptical, as it puts more stress on my spine than the treadmill. I use machines on which I pull or push weights or pull them down but they go back up themselves. That kind is really good because it lifts the spine and even your own weight is off it for a short time.

If you don't have access to a gym, walk like crazy. Use the bike as long as it doesn't cause pain. Pool workouts are really good, as you can walk and run in a pool and your weight is supported by the water. The resistance of the water gives you a good workout.

I hope you get good news from your tests. If you have other questions as you make your way through your back issues, we'll do our best to help you.

Take care,
Emily

Hi, Without knowing the extent of your injury it is hard to say however walking seems to be one of the most prescribed rehabilitation exercises. I had suffered back issues most of my life due to weight and other complications however consistent daily walking seems to do the trick for me. Keeps the weight off and strengthens my back. I have a treadmill desk which I use and I have lost about 23 lbs in just 3 months, so I am hooked. I am going to buy a better version as soon as I can since my home made set up just isn't as good as some units I have seen.

It is a desk that fits your existing treadmill along with a neat exercise ball chair to strengthen your core muscles. Good luck to you...and start walking!

Swimming would probably be the best thing, as it doesn't really put pressure on your spine or joints..but yet it gives you a very good workout. And do can do so enough to be a cardio workout to get your heart rate up, etc. I so wish there was a pool around me, if there was< i'd be there trying to exercise and try to lose some weight.
