Training for ~4200 mile bike trip over the summer?

I may go on this trip, haven't committed yet. One reason that I haven't committed to it is because I don't know if I'll be able to get in ample shape beforehand, what with being a fulltime student and a long winter coming on.

They will be averaging 50-90miles a day, and will nearly be across the US. Obviously a fair portion will have to be uphill. Maybe even there would be days or even a week or so of an uphill climb.

Obviously the best thing to do is to bike more. I get that. What else can I do to prep for this sort of thing?

Some side info: * Nearly 20, so still young. I think I should be able to heal/recover in a good amount of time.
*I still run here and there, stomach is flat... not terribly out of shape.
Also the plan is to be camping out/staying in hostels mostly, so that's the reason for all the supplies. In one part of a flyer, it says "use soap instead of shaving cream".. :P
I apologize. I live in the Midwest presently... and there will definitely be baggage to be carried on the trip. Quite a long list of supplies needed. I think multiple bags will be affixed to the bike.
I'm terrible with bike names and types, but I'm pretty sure that everyone going will be using hybrids.

Motivation is a bigger factor than conditioning. You gotta really want to take part in this potentially life changing adventure. As this will be with a group, the competitive spirit/support will likely be high and get you through the tough spots.

As for training, if you're riding regularly now, you can hold off on serious conditioning until about a month before the tour. Be best to work in at least one overnighter of 60-70 miles to test all your gear.

Upper body conditioning with weights or isometrics should not be ignored for maximum enjoyment of a long tour.

Other than a mechanically sound bike that fits you well, make sure you have a saddle that you can tolerate for 5-7 hours a day.

To avoid bonking, good hydration and adequate, frequent calorie intake is essential. Figure out what works for you before leaving on the tour.

Take a good look at the link. Everything there is to know about cycle touring is there somewhere. The journals are particularly informative.
