Train to Madison Square Garden In New York?

more questions about taking the train to NY from Ct. I have never taken a train before and have no idea what to do or where exactly to go and buy tickets. Can i buy train ticket weeks or days in advance?
Im In Plainville, Connecticut. Where can i go to get tickets?
I need them to go to NY and then come home that night, it might even be after midnight...do they run that late?
The date is May 9th... Im taking my daughter to the My Chemical Romance Concert.
I just want to make sure we have tickets there and back in advance.

ive taken the train there from south jersey for like 3 or 4 basketball games....
 
Yeh you can buy them in advance or change it at the last second, there are many trains that run there. Trains are on schedules though so I don' think you can get one that runs that late. You may have to stay a night
