I could hear the rumble
Of a train coming through
Like the sound of distant thunder
And I smiled and thought of you

How young we were back then!
When trains were not so rare
And their sound off in the distance
Sounded like a prayer

All is well, all is well
All is well with you
And the whistle of the train
Said that it was true

How young we were back then!
To think a lullaby
Was a song the train was singing
In a reassuring sigh

They could hear the rumble
Of a train coming through
Like the sound of distant thunder
And the crash of lightening, too

How young they were back then!
When trains were not so rare
And their sound off in the distance
Put everyone to prayer

All's not well, all's not well
All's not well with you
And the whistle of the train
Said that it was true.

Great Poem - reminded me of my brother Steve and I standing on the bridge at Roughdown Common as trains sped past and left us in a cloud of steam. We could hear them coming way before they reached us and we could never get the numbers because we couldn't see for smoke

Do you remember too..
running to the tracks
tiny legs flying...
the cars flying by..
counting their numbers
waiting for
that little red caboose
did you ever think?
they would discard
cut it loose?
The end of the line
the caboose
was cut
a door in history .. closed, tightly shut
