Trail blazing requirements?

So im going to be setting up blazes for a trail lasting about 10 miles around a lake. Could anybody out there give me ideas of how you put the blazes on the trees (like on the right or left or both of the trail), how far apart they should be, and also any other tips about how to set them up? thanks
