Trade-In or Sell ????

In the last 3 weeks I've basically gone all 3 ways.
1. I put the bike on Craigslist for 13K just to see what would happen.- no calls.
2. The next week I brought in to the dealer and put it on consignment. They wanted 12% but it was way better than trade in (about 2K difference) - no interest from the tire kickers at the dealer. Pulled after 1 week.
3. Screw it, worked out a deal on a new 2011 with a trade, got more $$$ by negotiating with them, still paid 500 less than MSRP on a new bike - but new bike has not arrived yet so I still have my 06 while I wait.
4. I Forgot about the ad on craigslist while I was waiting for my 2011. I got a call and sold the bike outrite for 12.5K, just $500 less than original price. Next day I called the dealer and now I can renegotiate a lower price when buying without a trade. What is the moral of this story? I dunno but it worked out good for me!

It's tough trying to sell a bike for what it's worth in today's market. You are better off trading if you can find a dealer that will give you a good deal, save on the tax as well.

Rebuilt the 2000 Dyna in my sig after the previous owner wrecked it and I picked it up real cheap. After I rode it for awhile I decided I didn't need 3 bikes. Listed it on Craigslist and received no real offers (bunch of BS trades) so I put it on consignment at the dealership I was working at back then. It hadn't sold after a couple months and the GM of the dealership offered to trade me straight across for a 2010 Iron I had been looking at so I jumped on it.

If youre going to trade it or sell it, take off what you feel like putting the effort into. What ever deal you make be happy with. Why get heart burn arguing over a couple hundred bucks. This its supposed to bee fun.

If you sell a car or a bike you have 6 months to deduct it from your sales tax. In all honesty, you could just say you sold a bike for $20k, sign an affidavit and you could deduct it. No proof needed. Been there.

i was thinking the same thing about the sales tax savings on trade.....

but, in your case, i do have a question. how could you have saved that much in sales tax? you got $960 above payoff on your bike. once your note was paid for, that amount of money isn't even really a down payment...... even at a 10% sales tax rate, thats only a $96 savings.

or am i missing something here?

You are missing something. It is about the difference between the trade and the new bike you owe taxes on. SO if there is a difference of 2000 between the two at 10% like you suggest then he would only owe 200.00. If he sold it outright and the new bike was 20,000 he would owe tax on the whole amount - at 10% it would be 2000.00. So he would need to net 1800.00 over his trade in amount to equal out.

Not sure you ADDED value to a bike.... just becasuse you spent money....
NOT trying to be a dick..... but we spend money buying stuff we like.... but that doesn't mean we've "added value"
If you find that one buyer, who wants exactly what you've done... GREAT... but most folks will down play the add ons

You can try to sell the bike out right... I don't know your local market... but here in Raleigh... there is a glut on the market.

Then you have the "PITA" factor... the weird trade offers... low ball offers, folks that don't show up...

If you can afford to wait... buy the new bike, keep the old one.. strip off the goodies, and install them on the new bike, and try to sell whrn the market turns around.
Or? just strip off the goodies, return the bike to stock... or as close as you can. and trade the bike in.... there's good and bad, to each

Consignment shops are in the "cat bird seat" they pay nothing for stock, and if it sells... they get a profit.
My buddy bought his '98 Ultra from one.... he walked in made a low ball offer, and the seller was happy to finally be rid of the bike.

Any bike that sits "for sale" for too long... will often get sold for a lot less than the seller was first hoping for.....or??? that's what I've seen... no sale... or cheap sale...
