I got a 2002 Toyota Rav4 from my brother, has 50K original miles, 4 cyl, AT with overdrive, only 2WD. I'm worried about the tranny because it seems to hang up more than I'm used to. I got rid of a 1991 Corolla that worked great with over 250K miles on it, and the tranny shifted nice and crisp, never hesitated.
But this Rav4, when I'm accelerating, it really hangs up a lot. Obviously, if I let off gas, it'll then shift, but it still revs up to over 3500 rpms before shifting. When driving, if I really baby the gas pedal, then it shifts normally. I can see how this actually would be good, because it's like a built-in "power/economy" button, if I accelerate enough, it'll hold the gear until revved up enough to keep the torque going. But it still just doesn't seem like other Toyota cars I've driven. Maybe it's diff because it's on a truck body, so heavier, and it needs the extra torque. But as I said, if I baby the gas pedal, extremely light, it'll shift no trouble, and there doesn't seem to be any trouble with torque at the lower rpm.
Tranny fluid is clean and recently changed. Engine can rev very well. So don't know if this is normal for Rav's, I haven't driven another one. But it just seems kinda sloppy when it takes so much higher to shift it down. I wouldn't call the tranny slipping, but that it only hesitates to shift.
