I can drive it around town all day and it wont overheat, also i can leave it ticking over all day and it wont overheat, you can travel up to speeds of 60mph on the motorway and it is fine, but anything over that and it overheats, any ideas, it is a 1992 2 litre gts non turbo
i forgot to say that the coolant comes out of the overflow tank

What is the outside temperature? If it's very cold, your coolant is not rated for that temperature.
The coolant temperature sensor is misreading, thus giving you wrong information (I think you have two sensors. One for the temperature gauge, and the other one for the thermostat and fan control).
It could also be the ECM (Engine Control Module). Have your car scanned for codes.

Good luck.

Do a compression test as your head/head gasket may be cracked.

Well, I'm taking a shot at this one anyway...

Is there anything missing ( aerodynamically from the undercarriage
of the car ) I believe in the front it's called the ( air dam ? ).. might
have gotten ripped off from hitting something on the road at one
point in time ?

Other than that, I'm kinda baffled...then again, haven't experienced
the mr2 in my lifetime.

Just some thoughts..
