Toyota Hilux '86' temperature gauge ?

on my hilux 1986 the temperature gauge starts half way when cold...why is this and can it be fixed?
 
If the gauge needle jumps up to 1/2 way after you turn the key,it probably needs a new temperature sending unit. If the gauge is always showing 1/2 way,the gauge itself is probably bad.
 
Disconnect the temp sender and see if the gauge goes down. If it does then it means that the sender needs replacing, if it doesn't then it means that it's the gauge or associated wiring.
