toyota camry getting horrible gas mileage?

I recently bought a 89 toyota camry from a private seller,it runs great it drives smooth,there's no loud sounds however for some reason I am getting horrible gas mileage (about 12 miles to the gallon) I can literally see the needle dropping before my eyes,I don't smell any gas that would indicate a leak.
what could be causing this problem?
