Toyota 4x4 or Jeep Wrangler?

I've been driving a Civic for five years and it's time for a change. I know I'll be giving up gas mileage, but it's something I'm willing to do. I had my mind set on a Toyota truck (pickup or Tacoma) anywhere from say 87-00 but lately have been thinking perhaps a Jeep; either way, a 5 speed. The most I'm willing to pay is $4,000.

I really don't need either one for work or for hauling around extra stuff, but the extra room would come in handy every time I go to and from college. Mostly just to be able to sit up higher, a more fun ride, and like my Civic and CRX, to get from A to B. I know the Toyota's have always ranked highest in terms of reliability and longevity (especially for a truck), but I've also heard that lately with the Wranglers...

I live in Ohio, so the 4x4 will come in very handy. Toyota truck or Jeep Wrangler?

I'd go with the Toyota. The main reason being that Jeep's Owner is financial disarray at the moment closing dealerships and assembly plants.... You might go to "craigslist," or Ebay Motors, and see what $4K will get you.....

If its just for off road fun get the Wrangler. Its simple and very capable stock. It has an almost endless supply of aftermarket parts for anything you could imagine should get get bored with it down the road somewhere and want to do some more serious off roading. Until then there are still plenty of Jeep dealers and OEM replacement parts if you want to remain stock.

BTW there are better trucks out there than Toyota.
