Toyota 4runner electrical gremlins in my tail lights and backup lights?

OK, here goes. I have a 1994 Toyota 4runner v6 manual trans that has 2 possibly related problems.
First, my backup lights don't work. Yes I have replaced the bulbs.
Second, my brake lights don't work. Yes I have replaced the bulbs and the fuse.
all other lights work as they are supposed to.
Hopefully someone out there will have an easy gizmo fix.

Do you take the truck offroad?

I have found my front turn lights stop working after I have been off road, because they get mudded up and wet.

Possilby your harness is damaged. I'd say that is the first thing you should look at. Perhaps it is waterlogged, perhaps the plugs are disconnected, perhaps it has been severed underneath.
