Toyota 4 Runner--- Struts question?

I have a 1998 Toyota 4 Runner. 108k miles.
I get it serviced at the dealership every 3-4 months..

I got it seviced today(oil/filter change, inspection). All checked out well, but I was told I needed new tires. I could tell, but I did some calling around for price quotes.

Went to a local shop close to home to get tires. Also wanted to get an alignment. I was ready to pay less than $500 for everything.

Then... the machanic at this shop tells me I need struts in the front. I wasn't told this at the dealership when I got it serviced hours earlier, though they might not even inspected them.

How do I know if this is something I REALLY need or if I am being screwed over? I was told to have this done before doing the alignment (tomorrow). I got the new tires, but I am puzzled. It's another $400 at LEAST for the front struts.

ok so he said struts not springs? usually toyotas, the ones i owned, notorious for bad springs. If you bounce the front of ur car, you go to the front of ur car, bounce your bumper a couple of times and stop, if the vehicle bounces more than once before coming to a stop, you need new struts. Also if you go under and look a the strut, if there is oil leaking, you need to replace them.
