Toyota 1991 MR2 Head Gasket?

I have a 1991 Toyota MR2 and i think the head gasket has gone. I noticed smoke coming from the rear left of the engine and then the temperature guage shot up followed by a ticking noise which got quicker the more you accelerated. It then just cut out all togther Any suggestions?
 
The engine in your MR2 is one of the best motors ever made. 4A-GE!! Anyhow, its very hard to ruin these motors except if you overheat them which u'v prob done. Topup water levels & see if it starts, keep checking temp. If it wont start, then the motor is cooked or could be headgasket if your lucky. Sounds like engine outta oil / water or overheated. Replace engine with 2nd hand one, may be cheaper than repairs/rebuild.
