I like that he's fine without. Whether he died or left or whatever (although it would have been just before the first movie as Molly was still young) it doesn't matter. They don't make a big weepy issue out of it.

Although I've heard that Woody was Andy's dad (as it was from the 50's/60's anyway) and passed down to him. Not sure where this came from though.

The parents were not important in the first film, it was purely about the toys so I guess they just didn't put much thought in it. Obviously they needed a parent so that's why he has a mum.
