Total Recall-all time classic?

Great lines and they always make me chuckle!

It's a classic no doubt. As someone has mentioned already Starship Troopers is a good film. Love it or hate it that one.

Come on everyone "oooooopen your miiiiiiiiiiiiiind"

Quiad: "If things have gone wrong, I'm talking to myself, and you've got a wet towel wrapped around your head."

I haven't seen MR properly, but the sequel was going to be set back on Mars.

But looking on the net now, shows that maybe you where right. Next time it's on then, I think I will watch it.

ETA,
This is what it says on IMDB though.

Total Recall

the bit where sharon Stone and the Doctor come to his room on Mars, to talk him into waking up is pure "Philip K Dick" (although not part of the orginal short story at all)

and the JohnnyCab is a great invention

the original short story had a wonderful ending!

"We can remember it for you wholesale"

--------
edited - some posters above mention the technician talking about the blue sky, and you are left wondering if he really went to Mars at all - what makes you say that - which bit are you referring to - its not the end?

The bit with the technician comes fairly early, when Arnie first goes to Recall and is given a memory that doesn't "take" because he has some prior fake memories that interfere with it. It's part of the sequence where he describes his ideal woman, and basically describes the woman he enRAB up with on Mars.

aah, i say - in the middle of the film

i didn't take it that he had been under all the while, and the whole thing was just a dream - i just that by going to rekal they had re-awakened his buried memories.

see below for an outline of the short story plot, which might clarify this

the short story - "we can remember it for you wholesale"

(* short story spoiler *)
(no actual trips to mars, no cohagen etc etc)

in that he goes to rekal - because its cheaper than really going to Mats - rekal try to implant false memories, but find he really has been to mars. and he really is an agent. doug says they will all (Rekal) be killed now (by the agency), so they agree to reimplant fresh memories to overlay the mars ones - but when they try to do that, they find he has another life underneath that one, where he had actually saved earth from alien invasion - there the story enRAB, with one final twist, which i wont divulge

I do love Total Recall, I think when I first watched it as a teenager I just enjoyed the special effects, one-liners, violence and the lady with the extra boob. But when I watched it again later, I realised what an interesting, clever sci-fi story it is (all thanks to PKD's original, of course).

I really, really don't like The Running Man film. It's probably another good, fun 80s Arnie action flick, but I just can't enjoy it because it's so different to the book, which I think would have made a much more interesting film.

:D

Dont forget: "Get your ass to Mars!"

TR is a great film - one of Arnie's best - but I dont think it's an all time classic. Predator or T2 may spark a more solid debate..

It doesn't follow the short story, but I think the variations are in the spirit of PKDick. Where-as I hated Minority Report because it seemed to me they took what the written story was saying and reversed it completely. As I recall,
In the film the pre-cogs predictions differ because they are mistaken, because humans do, in fact, have free will. Where-as in the written story, the pre-cogs differ because they are slightly out of sync and the prediction of the earlier ones changes the future and so affects the predictions of the later ones. It's a lot cleverer and more subtle, but is consistent with humans not having free will. I think Hollywood rejected it for ideological reasons.

That line KILLS ME.

Ahh. This film is by no means groundbreaking or perfectly written, acted, or directed. It's just a perfect example of the type of cinema I love, and I'm sad that I missed being able to watch this stuff at the cinema by about 15 years. Die Hard, Total Recall, Terminator 2, Predator, Alien - 80s/early 90s sci-fi and action flicks that are mostly so-so acted, so-so written, with so-so effects, that are just such good light hearted violent fun. I think the only actor now that comes close to that kind of attitude is Jason Statham.

Just watched Total Recall last night. I still enjoy it and think it is fun, but the effects do look a tad ropey now.

I do love all the animatronics they used, and every time I watch it the same thoughts come to me like Doug can't have any cartilage in his nose to pull that huge round bug out! :D

Also, I have never worked out how the mask of the large woman Doug wears works. When he takes it off, the ear cylinder seems to go right into his head?

Or how his eyes go back into his head after being decompressed or why they didn't freeze to death when they were exposed to the martian atmoshpere....mmmm maybe it was all a dream ;)

Aliens....pah! Overrated! Can't stand Newt and that whiney twot HuRABon. "That's it maaaan, game over maaaaan". He'd get a backhander from the sergeant if that was the Colonial Royal Marines.

Watched a film on Sky Prem last night, called 'New City Killers' or something like that.

After watching it appears to be a slight version of the 'Running Man' story, although not as good.

It was set in Scotland. This guys sister owes about 12 Grand to a Loan Shark, which she doesn't have, so is told she has to go into prositution in Lieu of the debt.

Her brother disagrees, and 1 day whilst in the Gents is advised of taking part in a Game, called 'Hide & Seek'. 1 grand up front, 11 grand in a locked locker in a station at the end, if he hasn't been caught.

Basically, then, the bad guys chase him to try and catch him, and along the way obsticles, such as people trying to stop him and people getting killed etc.

The ending is predicted, watch it to find out.
It wasn't as good, but it appears to be a bit of a rip-off.
