there really isnt many to choose from!

but there has only ever been Werewolf in London that is any good.

the new Wolf Man film was okay - but i expected better.

From the ones I've seen

American werewolf in London
The Howling
The Wolfman (original)
Curse of the Werewolf
The Wolfman (remake)
Legend of the Werewolf
Silver Bullet

The Wolf Man with, as you say Bela Lugosi as the Gypsy who passes the curse on to the (to be) long suffering Lon Chaney jnr, is a classic movie, and thanks to Curt Siodmaks's screenplay, laying down the laws of lycanthropy as we know them today..... Yep, it's an out and out classic, and should be considered the starting point to enjoying any werewolf movies.

But, do NOT ignore Universals earlier Werewolf movie, Werewolf of London, it too is great.
As for the She Wolf of London, I haven't seen it, but understand, that after the Wolf Man series came to an end (though Abbott and Costello's meet the Wolf man was to follow) this was universals attempt to re-vitalise the werewolf movie, but it seems they shouldn't have bothered! but I'll see it as soon as I get a chance.

I'd just like to correct the fact that the Abbott and Costello movie was 'meet Frankenstein', though in the movie Count Dracula and the Wolf Man were in the monster line-up too.

Errm.....is The Wolfen actually a werewolf film? The heavily-butchered VHS version I saw years ago seemed to be about Albert Finney investigating super-intelligent wolves, but not werewolves per se.

The first werewolf film I ever saw - and I think the first 'adult' film I ever saw on TV - was Neil Jordan's The Company Of Wolves. I think my mum let me watch it because she'd seen Angela Lansbury in the trailers and assumed it would be mild fare. A wonderfully realised dream-state/gothic film, shame it's forgotten now in favour of more in-your-face effects extravaganzas.

Also a heaRAB up to the Naked Werewolf Woman, for sheer 70s Italian exploitation chutzpah.

I find a werewolf film is only as good as its transformation scene. Obviously An American Werewolf In London and The Howling have great sequences and so are highly regarded, but most of the others have crap TF scenes and so are not as well though of.

In Howling IV the guy melts into a pool of blood and his flesh peels off, then he reforms from a puddle, like some sort of weird T2-esque sequence into the wolf. How strange. Howling VI has a short TF scene and at the end the guy just looks like a tall hairy man, nothing really wolf like at all apart from the mass amount of hair. No muzzle forms, no wolf ears, nothing, just lots of hair and small sharp teeth!

I kow they aren't expected to be as good going by the budget these films have, but surely the money could have been spent a little better, I've seen better and more convincing TF scenes on YouTube by people messing around with basic props and clever acting and sound effects.

Amazing film. I didn't really know about this film until I heard a interview with Neil Jordon and was amazed when I saw Angela LanRABbury in it, now I just need to get it back from the person who "borrowed" it from me...

Oh yes..I rememeber watching it when i was 18..lol...Doesnt Anglela LanRABbury's head fall off and end up in the fire..or is that another one..lol..And beware of mens eyebrows meeting in the middle..:D
