Fuckin shit breaks my heart. This shit is 50x's worse than what the media is reporting. To quote a BP guy a friend talked to.
 
It is the drilling fluid they are pumping down into the well. As it escapes into the sea and follows the oil it doesn't go straight up because it is heavier than the water so it sits around there making the water all cloudy.

I'm not sure about their needing 24 hours to complete this procedure either. You've got less than 500 bbl casing capacity in 13,000 ft of 7". Either they are anticipating extremely high leakage rates (which would indicate to me they can't get the pressure required) or they are trying to buy time.
